Jennifer Harrington received her BFA from Washington State University after completing her first solo exhibition, Passage of Time, in 2011. She has since been creating freelance artwork in her hometown of Olympia, Washington. In April of 2013, she participated in her first Arts Walk at All About You Salon. From October-December 2013 her paintings and drawings were hosted by Precious Metalsmith for Fall Arts Walk. In January 2014, she displayed work for Batdorf and Bronson Coffee Roasters.
As a college student, she specialized in painting and drawing, focusing specifically on acrylics and line drawings. In 2010 at WSU, she collaborated in a group exhibition entitled notMOMA, curated by artist Stephanie Syjuco. She, along with two good friends, created a full-sized mock-version of Jackson Pollock’s Number 31 using cheap salvaged materials. This experience empowered her to make bold strides in her art-making, and confidently endeavor new abstract work. A year later, ocean imagery became more prominent, as she focused on realms of memory, time, and personal experience. Jennifer has always been inspired by nature. Her parents planned many a camping trip, and the Atlantic Ocean was a regular destination. At the age of 13, she moved across the country: riding in a van from Athens, Georgia to Olympia, Washington. Spending hours staring out the side-view windows gave her a deep appreciation for landscapes, but she missed the sea. Childhood trips to the ocean remained stamped in the mind. Upon arriving in Washington, the ocean was accessible again. Through this reunion, she found the ultimate inspiration: memory. The Atlantic, the Pacific. The sea is full of turmoil. A vivid memory comes to mind: a wave at least 10 feet tall, if not taller. Though I was tumbled and tossed under a current; though I knew not when I’d breathe again; though salt water filled my sinuses, I was in love. After I leapt to the shore, lucky to be alive and gasping for air, I understood, at least partially, the ocean’s strength. The waves were akin to emotion and experience: so varied, so frightening, so invigorating. Like the ocean, I was a multitude of feelings and ways of being. And from the beach, I stared out in awe. The waves, in all their fury, looked so serene trailing out to the horizon. |
